HOW TO START AN OSTRICH FARM

If you have developed a huge passion for ostriches, let me tell you that you’re not alone. They are truly fascinating creatures – the largest bird in the world, yet even though their egg is the largest of all birds, their egg when expressed as a percentage of their body weight is the smallest.

But before starting your ostrich farm, you need to plan.

You need to gather information from many sources in order to make your own judgement. You are literally going to be bombarded with facts and fiction, and you won’t know where to start. Much of what you read will be hype – in order to try and sell you their own birds. Well, let me tell you, that we’ve been there, and done it, and if only we had impartial information to start off with, we could have avoided many problems. We learnt the hard way, but you have a choice. You too can “go it alone”, OR you can learn from ostrich farmers who now share their information through our “Information Guide to Starting an Ostrich Farm”. We supply the information without the “hype”.

Perhaps you want to know how much land you should use? Where to buy birds? What size incubator you should buy? What to feed them? Can you make money? To answer these questions and a whole lot more, we have produced an Information Guide to Starting an Ostrich Farm. This consists of eight chapters covering what you need to start, your farming options, how to feed your birds, how to incubate, how to raise young chicks, disease prevention, marketing, all leading to your own action plan.

To download the first chapter free of our Information Guide to Starting an Ostrich Farm, please enter your details in the form at the top of the page.

or buy the Informaton Guide now for 39.95 euros

You can also get specific information from our books page – some of these are also in Spanish. Contacting your national ostrich association can also provide you with useful information.

Multiply your ostrich income by becoming a PLATINUM member at http://www.ostrichresources.com/platinum.php - list of bird buyers and information package every month. Three month guarantee or your money back.

Obviously you want to try and get the best price you can for your production. One facility we offer, is a trading board. You may wish to place a free advert for the birds you want to buy, or alternatively if you are selling birds, you will need to buy these contacts. A summary of the adverts goes to over 4,500 of our subscribers every month. Note: Our Platinum members get the contact information free.

It is important to know the standards of the industry. For example a useful tool is the meat chart which gives you the names of the standard meat cuts recognised throughout the ostrich industry. Note: in USA, the American Ostrich Association have their own meat chart, but for international trade, you will need to adopt the international standards. You can check out more information on ostrich meat at http://www.ostrichmeatsupplies.com – you may want to know what cuts are classified as fillet, and which are classified as steak.

Skins are an important source of revenue. We are ostrich skin traders, and I think we can safely say that we have seen everything from skins hanging on a washing line in Greece to skins from ostriches attacked by a lion in Kenya. It is actually easy to get things right if you follow certain steps. One of the most important factors is the skin shape. Get that wrong and your skin will have no value on the international market. We have visited sellers that have had over 500 skins of the wrong shape – they lost over 25,000 euros (US32,000) because they failed to find out what buyers buy. Don’t make the same mistake. Become a platinum member and you will receive monthly information which will be invaluable for your success (annual fee of 995 euros or monthly instalments of 85 euros). Everybody seems to think they can go it alone and be successful. I tell you, you can’t.

By going it alone you will lose opportunities to multiply your income.

Other sources of income may include feathers, egg shells and ostrich oil.

If you want to check out what products are made from ostrich leather, then check out http://www.alani-exotics.com – you may be surprised with the variety of products on offer. Alternatively you can choose your own tanned ostrich leather at http://www.ostrichleather.com to make your own products. Here each skin is listed stating its colour, size, grade and price.

What do I do next?

I think the most important step now is to let us know who you are and your current plans. For our free monthly Ostrich Resources Newsletter, please complete our form. This enables us to classify your membership into bronze (those wanting to start an ostrich farm but have no ostriches as yet), silver (those connected within the ostrich industry or hobby ostrich farmers) and gold (those with a number of ostrich hens and actively involved in ostrich farming). Platinum is a fee paying service and is available to a selective few.

“I enjoyed World Ostrich Congress because it was a very good occasion of encounter and communication for scientists, students and for all the people interested to ostriches. Today COMMUNICATION is an imperative in order to go ahead as best as possible!
Thank you because you gave me the opportunity to communicate my researchs, and thank you because, with the news-letter, you make the ostriches "live".”
Virna Fasone (italy)

“The information I have received has been of an easily readable and understandable format, and has provided the answers to all my questions. I have yet to use the information in a practical manner as this will definitely be a project for my "retirement" to my farm in Normandy, france. Currently I work in the Middle east.
Thanks for ALL the help and advice.

I.Jio (Malaysia)

“I think you are contribuiting in a signficant manner in this industry and I´m sure many people is growing in knowledge and in their production practices. we are not using your valuable information at the present time but I have to thank you very much againg.”

“Me han ayudado a conseguir los anillos antipica. La información sobre sitios de como empacar la carne. También me ha ayudado el conocer los eventos y el merdado a nivel internacional.” Translation: They (the newsletters) have helped me source the anti-pecking devices. Helber Eduardo Pardo Diaz (Colombia)

“We at the Zafari African Restaurant in Bournemouth had never purchased Ostrich meat on a wholesale basis. We are now serving Ostrich dishes regularly. The Ostrich Potjie (pronounced Poy-Key) which is a slow cook with red wine and bacon is very popular. Your Ostrich website and newsletters helped us to get started, finding sources and the available cuts of meat.”
Paul Garratt (United Kingdom)

“First of all thanks to your attention to my needs . all information that you have send to me sure it was useful for me to improve my knowledge in this fields but as you may know ostrich production has been started in Iran same as other countries but its just in the begining. but the things that is more interesting for me to find some famouse company to help me in improvement of prodouction procedure and process as they be able to give me licence for exporting of products under theirs authouroty and brand so if you handle my needs or can introduce them to me its your favors to me and we can start a win -win business relation.”

Volker Schmidt (India)

“As of this moment I'm still preparing things before entering ostrich farm business. It's been a big help to me.If it is ok with you, kindly give me a breif materials on how will I handle Ostrich (from habbit to business). What breed will I start and how many is ideal for me. Im only a simple person who wishes to have this kind of creatures.”
Macario G. Garcia Jr. (Philippines)

“Thank you to your kindness supports. Thank you to your precious informations on Newsletters. You know we are from Vietnam it is depveloping country. Ostrich raising is just started in 1998 with very very few. Today it is spread over country we estimate about >15.000 breeders today. It is very very interesting for us (Viet Ba OStrich farm and Vietnam Foutry Institution) to be in Xian China year 2004 for a big Conference meeting of Ostrich you see we have taken many pictures from the meeting with Chairman of World Ostrich and many other relation to send to our Ministry of Agriculture to remind of them what the Ostrich world today. We was informed from that there will be simillar meeting in May 2006 like that in Vietnam for the OStrich Farm in Vietnam sitting toghether and give out their own opinions and experiences like training in Xian 2004. But you see today is June it still on paper, no one has experiences as good enough to talk in the medium Vietnamse Ostrich Farms only. Even Mr Tien who director of Vietnam fountry Institution they has >2000 OStrich today but he can not speech of experiences. From Xian Meeting weak up me and two other man due to so far we have some different from specialists (example from Khalifar Egip) I keep contact with Khalifar for helping with Hatching so our Incubation today is rather good.”
and
“Dear Sirs, At first I would like to say thank you very much for your Ostrich Organization. The second we would like to beg you to keep our informations of Newsletter and others documentation relation on Ostrich. We known of meeting in Mandirid but could not get financial to come due to our bad profite income as after Sars is Chicken flue and now is Pig and Cow. Your kindly support will encourage us very much due to we feel reerly tired of Fountry raising here in Vietnam as sickness continuously so we are very scare of our Ostrich but in fact our Ostrich is very very strong. There is no any Ostrich to be die of sick so we still think of try to keep them as much as possible due to compare other fountry it is still the best for alternative today. Thank you and Kindly Regards From Ostrich farm in Vietnam From my bottom of heart I wish Organization Developing Continuously to help more and more farm like we are”
Mrs Yen (Vietnam)

“DEAR MR. ALAN, IT IS SUCH A PLEASURE FOR ME TO DESCRIBE HOW IMPORTANT AND USEFULL ARE YOUR NEWSLETTERS AND HOW MUCH THEY HAVE BEEN HELPING ME. BESIDES THAT, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I HAVE BEEN SUGGESTING YOUR SITE FOR SOME FRIENDS IN THE STRUTHIO AREA , WHO , UNFORTUNATELLY, DIDN´T KNOW YOUR SITE ALREADY . AND I MAY SAY, THEY LOVED IT, SPECIALLY THE NEWSLETTER ABOUT THE TECHNICS OF SALTED SKINS.
I AM REALLY THANKFULL FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND PROUD OF KNOWING THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS INTERESTING ON IMPROVING YOUR SITE VIEWING TO HELP US!”
Rosana Gasparroni (Brazil)

“We are still studying the viability of the project and gathering more information. Your input will certainly help.”
Dr. KC (Malaysia)

“Dear Allan I wrote this first to say thank you again and yes to tell you that your newsletters and other ifnformation you gave me did help me very much. I was then trying to get some infomation on how to raise Ostrich and probably try to start a farm later on but then I have no idea whatsoever on how to do it and what are the things I should know about it, the things that I'll be needing not to metion how to market it afterwards. Anyway I search the internet to get some information but all i get are just small dicussion about the birds itself although there are others who tells me more. I feel then that i did not heave enough information so i search some more and as luck would have it i came across your article and i readily submit a querry to you. At first I would just get the same information from the ones i have seen before but I was surprised at what you have sent me. You did just give me the basic but other things as well like what kind of place is needed to put the farm, the hatchery, how to take care of the eggs, the diseases it is susceptible to and how to aoid it. Basically you gave the necessary tools so to speak in order for the likes of me to get started. Above all else there are those news letters regrding the conventions, the marketing demands for ostrich meat and its other products. So its not like you just given me a piece of cake but the the whole box of cake and to top it gave me the place on where I can get the cake. I really appreciate all these things and would have gone into the business readily had it not for more pressing matters that needs my whole attention. But I wish I could still recieve informations from you regarding the trends and any advaces in technologies. ” Romeo Bayot (Philippines) “Your interesting & informative newsletters have developed my interest in these wonderful birds. Our property is being further devaloped to accomadate more.” Hugh Dunedin (New Zealand) “Dear Alan, Thanks for your look up. I read your starting lessons for ostrich and other information on this field. They are all ok. What I would like more to get and have contact is the market information in world and also new information about ostrich growing, foods, better and more egg to bird ratio or lets say more 1 day birds from a hen. Also your news letter is good. I prefer to receive all this through mail and not by post because I think it is easy way. If you are interested in ostrich business in Iran let me know what you need and how we may cooperate later.”
Farzad Bighal (Iran)

“Dear Alan. I appreciated the important contribution you made to organisation of the 2005 World Ostrich Congress in Madrid and giving me the opportunity to attend and meet industry people and researchers and learn about the latest industry issues and research being undertaken. It also gave me the chance to extend to participants at the Congress the research I have undertaken on ostrich welfare (declawing training manual) and QA protocols to improve skin quality. The newsletter you produce provides valuable information and keeps me up-to-date with issues of importance in the world ostrich industry.”

“Hello ! Im thankful for the valuable information that i receive from you each time! Im still a student at university, and i have always been interested in Ostrich farming and crocodile farming as well. The information that i get helps me realise the vital factors about this business and how external factors will affect me when the time comes for me to start on this investment, like how to relate my location for operation (Botswana) with the international market. I have found vital information about how i could plan, prepare and start the operation, how returns flactuate and also which products really bring more income. I think what i need as well is to meet farmers who are progressing on this business, and not to forget those who have been unfortunate so that i may learn from their experiences both positive and negative. Looking forward to reading your next newsletter. Thank you!”
