Soap Making

Basic Soap Making Recipe

  • Tallow/lard 16 oz (454 gr.)
  • Olive Oil 10 oz (283 gr.)
  • Coconut Oil 10 oz (283 gr.)
  • Ostrich Oil 6 oz (170 gr.)

  • Lye (sodium hydroxide) 5.77 oz (163.5 gr.)
  • Water 16 oz (454 gr.)

During the soap making process 20% of the water is discounted.

Basic Soap Making Instructions

  • Wear safety goggles and protective gloves such as neoprene gloves
  • Combine solid lye and water (ALWAYS pour lye into the water, and NEVER pour the water onto dry lye)
  • Stir well and then set aside, allowing the mixture to cool to 100-125 F (37 to 52 C). Do not breathe the fumes.
  • Combined mixed solution with the melted tallow/lard and the oils. Be careful not to splash.
  • Stir the combined mixture until it traces. This is the point at which the mixture thickens.
  • If the mixture has not traced after 15 minutes stirring, leave for 15 minutes and stir for 5 minutes. Repeat this process until mixture traces.
  • Pour the raw soap mixture into molds. Allow to rest for a few days.
  • Turn the soap out of the molds, and if very soft, allow the soap to cure for a few days to firm the outside.
  • Cut the soap into manageable size bars, and allow to cure and dry until firm. This is best done in an airy place where the soap bars can breathe.
